The $100 Genome Debate Misses the Real Challenge: Interpretation

The sequencing industry is once again focused on price.
With the recent launch of the Element Biosciences Vitari platform promising ultra-low-cost sequencing, conversations around the “$100 genome” have returned to the spotlight. Yet this milestone is not entirely new. Platforms from Ultima Genomics and MGI Tech have previously introduced similar pricing narratives, reflecting a broader shift toward dramatically lower sequencing costs.
Lower costs matter. They expand access, enable larger studies, and accelerate research globally. But focusing exclusively on the price of sequencing risks overlooking the most complex part of the genomic workflow.
Generating an affordable genome is no longer the primary challenge. Interpreting it is.
Cheaper sequencing doesn’t translate into cheaper interpretation.
Over the past decade, sequencing costs have dropped exponentially. At the same time, the downstream work required to transform raw data into meaningful clinical insight has grown in complexity.
Multiple analyses of clinical genomics workflows suggest that analysis, interpretation, and reporting can represent more than half of the total cost of genomic testing, particularly in rare disease diagnostics. Even as sequencing approaches commodity pricing, the effort required to curate evidence, assess variants, and deliver clinically reliable conclusions remains substantial.
This shift is especially visible in rare disease, where interpretation demands deep expertise and careful validation. As Rare Disease Day approaches on February 28, it is worth recognising that faster sequencing alone does not shorten the diagnostic journey if interpretation workflows cannot scale.
The risk of a growing imbalance
As sequencing capacity expands, the industry faces a new imbalance. We are producing genomic data faster than we can reliably interpret it. This creates several challenges:
- Growing backlogs of variants requiring evaluation
- Increased manual workload for clinicians and genetic counsellors
- Variability in interpretation outcomes across laboratories
- Delays between data generation and clinical decision-making
The success of sequencing innovation has shifted the bottleneck downstream. The next frontier is not how cheaply we can sequence, but how accurately and consistently we can interpret at scale.
From sequencing innovation to interpretation innovation
Technological progress from sequencing companies deserves recognition. Platforms like Aviti demonstrate how rapidly engineering advances are reshaping genomics.
But the next phase of progress will depend on interpretation innovation, building workflows that can transform massive datasets into clinically meaningful insight.
This requires structured knowledge frameworks, scalable analysis tools, and approaches that help clinical teams manage complexity without sacrificing rigor.
As the cost of sequencing falls, the value of interpretation rises.
Looking ahead to ACMG and Rare Disease Day
Our team will be at ACMG this year, where discussions around sequencing innovation will undoubtedly continue. These conversations are important, but they are only part of the broader picture.
As Rare Disease Day approaches, the industry has an opportunity to broaden the narrative. The real milestone is not simply the cost of generating a genome, but our ability to extract meaning from it, reliably, reproducibly, and at scale.
The future of genomics will not be defined by sequencing alone. It will be defined by how effectively we interpret what we create.
